Welcome to another GThentic Review, today we’re unboxing the iPhone 12 in white along with an Otterbox Aneu Magsafe case.

The Otterbox case is ultra slim, with raised grippy edges to protect the camera and the screen. I chose the blue color with green accent buttons and a gray border, which I think will compliment the white iPhone very well. Let’s go ahead and unbox this Otterbox case, which fits both the iPhones 12 and 12 Pro.

Here are my first impressions, the case feels nice but not premium, however, it does not feel cheap either. It’s somewhere in the middle. Inside is lined with a soft microfiber lining, similar to Apple cases, and you can see the magnetic ring designed for MagSafe accessories. I don’t have any MagSafe accessories at the moment to test, but if I do get any in the future I’ll be sure to do a follow up.

Let’s now move on to the iPhone 12. The iPhone text on the box and the Apple logo are embossed in silver and on the back it states that the charger and headphones are sold separately. There’s also a picture of the iPhone on the front of the box.

After opening the box, you are greeted by the back of the iPhone displaying the Apple logo and camera module which now supports Dolby Vision High Dynamic Range (HDR) video recording. This feels lighter than the iPhone XR. The front and back of the iPhone are covered with glass with an aluminum band in the middle. On the right side you will find the power button and mm wave 5G antenna. The lightning port is at the bottom. On the left side you will find the mute switch and volume rocker. The display is now upgraded to an OLED panel from the previous LCD display with support for Dolby Vision HDR and it’s covered with Apple’s Ceramic Shield (special glass) which makes it less likely to break in an accidental drop. The back glass is still the same gorilla glass used on previous iPhones.

Let’s go ahead and boot up this iPhone 12 for the first time. While that’s happening, let’s see what else is in the box. Inside is a lightning to USB-C cable, so you will either need a USB-C power brick or laptop, a wireless charger, or to use your older charger and cable if you already had one. I’ll put a link in the description for some recommended chargers. Of course you get some paperwork and a single Apple sticker as well.

I’ll now go ahead and install the case. You’ll want to start from the top of the iPhone and work your way down the sides. The cut-outs are precise, the camera is protected, the mute switch is a little recessed, and the buttons feel nice.

If you’re upgrading from a previous iPhone, after choosing your language and country, you bring your previous iPhone next to the new one to begin transferring your settings and data. This will copy all data from your previous iPhone to the new one including your photos and passwords; however, apps will have to be re-downloaded from the AppStore. This means you will loose any apps which are no longer available on the AppStore.

During the setup process you will be prompted to enter the passcode of your previous iPhone so that your new phone will be able to decrypt the data which will be transferred to it. No cables are needed and both phones need to remain in close proximity to each other until the transfer is completed.

That’s been a first look and unboxing of the iPhone 12. Overall I think it’s a very nice upgrade from an iPhone XR or earlier. The squared off edges are nice and makes the phone easier to hold, the weight is less than previous iPhones of similar size and the OLED display is nice with support for HDR video playback.
